It's unclear exactly why plaque builds up on artery walls. One theory is that it begins with some type of damage to the artery's inner wall. This theory make sense, because some of the risk factors for atherosclerosis can also damage blood vessels. These include:
-High blood pressure
-High cholesterol
-Diabetes
-Smoking
A damaged artery may become inflamed, and platelets try to repair the injury. Certain white blood cells move in and start attracting cholesterol and other fatty materials. Eventually plaques form and harden.

Other risk factors for developing atherosclerosis include:
- Obesity
- Diets high in saturated fats
- Lack of physical activity
What do you know about the problem of obesity in the USA?
ОтветитьУдалитьObesity is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, the number one cause of death in the United States. Excess weight increases patients chances of developing diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure - all three of which are causes of atherosclerosis. Extra risk comes with being overweight (BMI - (Body Mass Index) greater than 25), but particularly with obesity (BMI greater than 30).1 Approximately 20 percent of Americans between the age of 25 and 34 are obese; another 10 percent of the population becomes obese with each passing decade up to the age of 55.2
ОтветитьУдалитьFast Facts:
Obesity is having a high amount of extra body fat.
More than half of Americans are overweight or obese.
Taking the weight off can slow down or prevent atherosclerosis as well.
A study found that waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the most accurate obesity marker for identifying people with atherosclerosis.3
It's rather interesting!
ОтветитьУдалитьAnd what about Russia?
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development has recently compiled a rating of countries, which population suffered from obesity. Russia is not on the top, however, our population does its best to head the list.
ОтветитьУдалитьRussia appears to have 50% fat inhabitants and 15% extremely fat ones. Unfortunately, Russian Ministry of Public Health doesn’t list obesity as a disease, requiring regular prophylactic activity.
